To be eligible for Disability Insurance Benefits, you must have paid into Social Security for 20 of the last 40 quarters before your date of disability.  There is no such requirement to be eligible for Supplemental Security Income benefits, but there are resource limits which you must meet. There are usually three steps in the process of a claim.  Once a claim is filed, the Social Security Administration will gather medical, vocational and educational information and make an initial decision.  If you are denied benefits, you can request that Social Security reconsider their initial decision.  If you are denied a second time, you can request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) where you can present testimony in support of your claim. Many applicants file the initial application themselves, although I prefer to file the application for my clients so that all necessary information is provided to Social Security from the beginning of the process.  However, I do accept claims at any level in the claim process.
